HSV reports reality and for pregnant women affected
This is an important note found on hsv reporting Lab
Note: Negative results do not rule out the possibility of infection. Retesting is recommended after 8-14
days. Seroconversion or rising titre indicates presence of active infection
Comments
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is of two types namely Type 1 & Type 2 which present slight antigenic
differences.Type 2 virus Is mainly responsible for genital lesions. Asymptomatic infections may occur in
healthy individuals. Genital HSV during pregnancy carries a high risk of Herpetic chorioamnionitis with
spontaneous abortion, preterm labor and mucocutaneous exposure of the baby during vaginal
delivery.Primary genital HSV is a greater risk for the baby as the total number of lesions is often higher in
primary infection and maternal serum contains IgM with no IgG for transplacental passive protection of the baby
