पाश्चात्त्य संस्कृती म्हणजे नक्की काय याचा मागवा घेत होतो. अर्थात आज जे काही आपल्यासमोर पाश्चात्य जग उभं आहे; त्याला संपूर्णपणाने पाश्चात्य संस्कृती असे म्हणता येणार नाही. ती पाश्चात्य संस्कृतीची आजची व्हर्जन आहे. त्यामुळे पूर्व काळातील पाश्चात्त्य संस्कृतीचे काही ज्ञान होते का? असे बघत होतो. त्या संबंधाने जे काही थोडेफार वाचन झाले त्यातली ही काही पुस्तके आहेत. त्यांच्या अनुषंगाने निरीक्षणे नोंदवणार आहे. अधिकृत साहित्य हे निश्चितच समाजाचा आरसा असते. त्यामुळे या इंग्लिश क्लासिकल्स चा विचार त्या अर्थाने केला असता चुकीचा होणार नाही असे वाटते. जरी शंभर टक्के ठोसपणाने सांगता येत नाही; कारण काळ वेगळा आहे तरी चांगला अंदाज तर नक्की येत आहे. यातले अर्थातच पहिले पुस्तक बायबल आहे. - 0001 सेन्स अँड सेन्सिबिलिटी व प्राईड अँड प्रिज्युडिस - 1805. मग शांता शेळके यांनी अनुवादित केलेलं लिटल वुमेन हे अमेरिकन जीवनाबद्दल आहे 1868. द पोर्ट्रेट ऑफ लेडी 1885. चार्ली चापलीन जीवन चरित्र 1900 च्या पुढे.  डायरी ऑफ अना फ्रेंक 1939. या सर्वांमधून असं दिसतं की उच्च अभिरुची असणारी ही संस्कृती होती. बे...
