International Yog Day

As we approach international yog day June 21 st; it is time for all of us to know what exactly the meaning of Yog is.
Is it just yogasans and pranayam or something more ?
It is all about a lifestyle that leads a path to happiness!
You are also invited heartily to write your stuff to me.
We as a human being are in constant search of happiness through various ways as per the liking knowledge and ability of the individual. But what we find is that it always remains away from us. The seers of age old times thought over it and found some solutions for mankind to be really and constantly happy.
They found that worldly things do not make us happy but on the contrary we fall in more and more pains as we get so manyt things in life. One of the ways of life for constant and permanent happiness is Yog. Ultimate goal is Mukti means free from worldly things and get the God.
Yog itself means ' yujyate iti Yog: ' meaning that what connects [ to God ] is yog. What today is famous as yog is just a small part of yog viz. Asanas. So we are calling yogasanas as yoga added now a days by pranayam which also is a small part of yog. So this is Rajyog we discuss first.
This science of life science of happiness is called yogashastr. Bhagwad Gita is also yogashast under bramhavidya every adhyay ends up with ' bramhavidyayam yogashastre .....'
Yog comrises of 8 parts so called as ashtang yog. The 8 parts or angas are like this.
              1. Yam : it includes self discipline in following ways. Non violence, truth, not to snatch others property, abstinence, no desire of materialistic things.
              2. Niyam : cleanliness of body and mind, self study, connection to God, perservrance, happy with what you have
              3. Asanas : Postures to perform everyday so that you could stably sit for meditation for hours together.
              4. Pranayam : control over breathing.
              5. Pratyahar : Practice to keep yourself away from greedy attracions like eatables, money, sex etc.
              6. Dharana : Sitting down and concentrate on various chakras or parts of body.
              7. Dhyan : Famous as meditation. Concentration to the God almighty.
              8. Samadhi : Total union with the God.
As we follow the way of living told by yog; we start improving self control, get happiness, stop or reversal of bad habits. It is not necessary for one to achieve samadhi and then only get happiness it is the utmost stage; but any step before is beneficial for us. All we have to do is turn away from lifestyle of enjoyment through eating, hard drinks, smoking, stop wondering body and mind in sex thoughts watch and deeds, stop thinking constantly about money etc. This is what today our life has become many times to much of above things drown us to very bad situations like addiction, frustrations, depressions, ill health or death etc.
So it is for us whether to chose Yog or otherwise!

Hi Prasad,

Very nicely explained.

I add - first step - Yoga is also integration of body -mind-buddhi and ultimately the soul. It is beautifully depicted in Kathot Upanishad with example of a Rath. Five horses are five sense - reins are the mind -buddhi is the charioteer and -Soul the Swamy. Soul should direct the life and not the horses (our life is opposite and hence the problems.).
‎Second step -
Soul the Swamy is ever blissful, ever peaceful and needs nothing. Then why in life itself should we struggle? So became pacifist and little laidback too. This is I think interpretation in India and hence the downfall of society.

Soul is hidden away from our self that we comprehend. Hence we must do the journey towards that. Journey will require scientific discoveries, moral life, struggle towards refining the qualities that are required for strong character. Team-work is one essential path because when you work in team you learn to accommodate others, respect others views. That is beginning of self erasing of ego.

We must remain in our chosen path with faith in God and keep moving refining our apparent self in manner that if will slowly start reflecting the true soul.

That I feel is also Yoga. (Karmayoga).

Hope I am able to convey my few thoughts correctly.

Pl share your suggestions to improve them.

Mukund
